Hopefully you have already read part1, which was more of a technological review of 2015. Now it's time for a more emotional and household review of 2015. Read on.
A Better Diet
Changing our Diets in 2015 is something that is long overdue. Many of us know what we should eat to make us healthier and to prevent the probable suffering of animals who may have lived questionably and died painfully to support our whims. But many of us continue to ignore these factors. We have been changing our diets for a period of years now, currently:
- No alcohol, except on special occasions.
- No red meat
- No desserts! As a lifelong dessert eater, this is still a Marcus WIP (work in progress), but generally speaking it's adhered to
- Chocolates by exception only
- Wherever possible eat home cooked vegetables
- Plenty of fish, pasta for Marcus
- Agata majors on Salads
- Many home cooked Lentils and Beans
- No fizzy drinks except water
- No bought juices, all juices are squeezed as below:
There is this famous quote, that can in 1 sentence tell you how to eat healthily. Are you ready?
Eat real food, mostly vegetables, not too much
We twice tried to upgrade and replace our Philips HR 2752 juicer, but it is back because it's simply better. Aside from the technicalities we'd like to stress our continued change in diet and lifestyle.
- No fizzy drinks, except water
- No shop purchased juices, even 'freshly squeezed'
- Only home squeezed fruit juice
- Usually grapefruit and oranges with pomegranates if pricing offers allow.
Cleanliness is next to ... our hearts: and we welcome spreading the mantra. Organisation is always key.
Our iRobot Brava continues to perform a daily clean, it does just enough to keep the add the final polishing touches, and we don't care how slow it is. We just start it and leave.
The base load is still using a Dyson vacuum. However due to recent failure we've made some changes (not yet documented)
The flip side is washing, and thanks to the daily Swiss bargain offers site qoqa.ch we managed to buy a A+++ energy rated, Samsung washing machine. This now gets a very hard life of daily operation(s) sure all our clothes, mostly sports related are ready for the next day's
We remain an open yet deeply paranoid couple. The Theft in December 2015, which personally cost us several thousand CHF (that means thousands or dollars or pounds to international readers) was a sorry reminder.
And yes, here in Switzerland, where we think we have less cause to worry about these affairs. As such we have analysed and tried to correct security weaknesses that we could identify
Physical security - Our Apartment is now continuously monitored using multiple failsafes
Personal Location - We make efforts to make sure our online tracking, which is substantial, is available only to those close friends who might benefit and reciprocate
Personal Encryption - After a substantial analysis we have encrypted bloody everything. AES 256? Don't make us laugh. The key thing though is to identify and eliminate exceptions, the so called 'key under the mat' weakness.
After over 18 months of planning we finally took delivery of our first Motorhome in mid 2015. It is a Dethleffs Globus T8
It's part of a radical change of lifestyle that has us practising going out and exploring the wider world instead of staying home, home currently being Lausanne Switzerland.
Thus far all the planning and implementation has worked out 100%. As with any of our larger purchases we hope our choice and decision making process reflects who we are:
- This is our first Motorhome
- It is designed not to be extravagant but small, efficient and just large enough to do the job
- We were careful with the money and ordered the T series not I series Integrated to save some money, and made a modest Engine choice
- The T8 has some major features we wanted. Namely: A garage with room to store our 2 race road bicycles without dismantling, as well as 2 gas cylinders for extended trips off grid. A separate shower and bathroom, showers are mandatory after our daily exercise. One of the lowest and also lightest vehicles, less than 2700Kg making it relatively fast and economical. Easy serviced locally in Switzerland or Europe via the Dethleffs dealer network.

Exercise and More Exercise
We continue to enforce the exercise regularly and daily mantra. It's not cycle 10K or swim 1K or run 5K. It is AND not OR, and when I say 10K I mean 10K Km. What did you think we meant?
As one gets older there will no doubt come a point when you will, despite all efforts get slower, shorter of breath, and fancying a lie in during the morning, every morning. But not yet, we are still getting faster. Albeit slowly!
Ultegra Wheels and Fat Tyres
Both our road bicycles are now rebuilt using fatboy 28 section Continental tyres. Marcus now even has his new Ultegra 6800 rims, ready for Tubeless Easy, should it ever become <readily> available!
Our home and mobile infrastructure is now fully setup to make Exercise easy and we think this (and knowing your limits) is key to making the daily exercise both practical and enjoyable.
Razor A5 Scooter
We both have push scooters and either home in Lausanne or away in our Motorhome we are often found scootering around. In the dry and on tarmac this is an ideal compact and self powered means of transport.
You can easily propel yourselves to an average speed of over 14 Km/h on the flat, this is faster than our running pace.
Furthermore, apart from being good exercise our scooters fold up small and can be carried when not in use. They are mechanically simple and can be disassembled and maintained with a minimum of fuss. Lastly they are cheap, the Razor can still be bought today for about 100 CHF (60 GBP).

Stand Up Paddle
On the advice and recommendation of a friend (thanks Kathy!), Agata is very enthusiastic about Stand Up Paddling. And so we took the plunge and bought a modest, entry level, inflatable model shown above.
Buying a starter model is a good way to see if you use it enough and like it enough to deserve better. Better boards and paddles can cost a fortune, cf the /small fortune/ we paid for above. They can also be fixed i.e. not inflatable, but for us this would mean storage issues inside Stuart (our motorhome).
In water temperatures > 17 degrees then you are likely to see Agata paddling and Marcus, in his wetsuit, frantically swimming to try and stay in almost the same area. Not easy, because Agata is getting fast on this board.
Finis SwiMP3 and Swimming
In 2015 Marcus and Agata tried really hard to like Swimming. Swimming is the sport we can do when it is raining, unlike running or cycling which are between painful and dangerous in the rain. The catch is, like for any sport, unless you really love it, you don't participate willingly in poor weather conditions!
So technology aside in 2015 we took Swimming lessons and took advantage of our local Lausanne lake which is swimmable (with a Wetsuit) any time from April of the year onwards.
These are a few of the more social points of 2015. As before we save all for posterity in .pdf format and this is linked below. Enjoy.
