Sunday Sermon: Do you Need Help

Beatles:Help/GodzG Remix

As we get older and sometimes wiser; we determine a better impression of what we can, and what we certainly cannot achieve in this world.

Today, more than in previous generations we are encouraged to believe that with hard work and determination we can achieve anything.

It is a recurrent theme.  It is relentlessly portrait in shows like X-Factor, in the mantra that is taught to every American school child or in endless self Improvement TV commercials and YouTube presentations.

To Marcus this is just blatantly preposterous. I would more aim for realism, and particularly that achievement, happiness and success are not well correlated. Surprisingly to me the Beatles have some good lines to ponder.

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody’s help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I’m not so self assured,
Now I find I’ve changed my mind and opened up the doors.
– John Lennon, the Beatles

Well there are of course an infinity of recommendations and no easy solutions.  But in considering a way forward towards Happiness I would include

  • Be realistic about your expectations
  • Don't pass on the burden of success to your children.
  • Don't reason that failure or unhappiness in this life will be offset by riches in a next life or an afterlife
  • You need to have a plan, and discover your passion
  • Wherever possible offer help and interact with others. Giving help and showing gratitude makes humans like ourselves and others surprisingly happy.
  • But caution:  One way friendships, supposed friends or relations who take & take & take are no friendships at all. Break those connections and seek meaningful interactions elsewhere

And now, back to the Beatles: remixed of course :-)
