5W LEDs are go

I have already commented on the moving target that is home LED lighting. After monitoring the OEM market carefully I can now confirm that the 5W LED GU10 lightbulbs are now readily available and in volume production.

What is the significance of this?

Old Halogen bulbs were usually rated upto about 50Watts and the new 5W LED can finally match this in terms of light ouptut.

So for example in our lounge our 5 light ceiling mounted installation is burning 5 x 5 = 25 Watts instead of 250 Watts, a huge saving of 225 Watts (Joules per second).

Some notes:

  • The Bulb is longer than the 1W and 3W LEDs previously sourced. But we have false ceilings, therefore there is plenty of room for the additional length

  • We have tried a few suppliers. The current favourite is: LINLIN House on eBay

  • Even at their wholsale prices you are not going to save money i.e.
regular halogen bulb cost + electricity at 50W /bulb LESS than
5W LED bulb cost + 5 electricity cost

  • Base type : GU10
    Input voltage: 110~240VAC
    Power: 5W
    Housing material: aluminum, plastic
    Lamp life expectancy: 25,000Hrs
    Viewing angle: 90°
    GU10 dimension: Ø50 x (H) 70mm
    Color temperature : COOL WHITE(5300~7000K
    Lumens : 145lm

    Pounds and Kilos must GO

    The doctor politely advised me

"You have a bizzarely efficient digestive system"

What he really meant was, you eat like a normal person, yet you still put on the pounds/kilos.

So Agata and I are proud to announce week #2 of our diet plan!

    What have we forgone ...

    • No chocolate - now that hurts!
    • Limited Ice Cream
    • Drastically reduced Wine consumption
And we still have to do
    • Work
    • At least 2 hours Daily exercise
    • Including Marathon and Kilimanjaro training

    Results so far:

    agata .... *** confidential ***
marcus ... -2Kg at end of week 1, -2.5Kg at end of week 2.
[This does not appear to be cheating Water loss, since max weight loss so far after long run -5Kg]

20090810 update: Weight loss now a sustained 3Kg

20090916 update: Weight loss now a sustained 6Kg

Having communicated my future unemployment status to close friends I am confused, cross and contorted to announce that once more my last minute procrastinating employer has decided to give me another short term contract.

End-3 days of work to go and I've not seen the terms of the contract, nor know of the salary or duration. The last time this happened this employer decided to cut my salary by 15% so it's not safe to say that this is a done deal.

I'll just wait and see then.

So, to all of you who had politely wished me condolences on my imminent attachment to the Unemployment line please hold back your kind comments for another few months. I am so sorry to mess you all about, I shall try and find something more reliable in the mid term.

Until then sit back and relax to the Message, Grandmaster can voice the frustration for our generation.

    Lazy Sunday Afternoon

Well as the Small Faces once commented we can report that indeed it was a Lazy Sunday afternoon However our morning was a little more energetic

Agatas marathon training is now in full swing and this includes downloading some training plans from Runners World If you follow the link you will read ...
Our Garmin-ready schedules (devised by 1983 London Marathon winner Mike Gratton) can be downloaded in one file to your Garmin Forerunner 205, 301, 305 or 405. We have versions specifically targeting the Flora London Marathon (April 26, 2009), and versions you can customise to target a marathon on any other date. The schedules include target paces, heart rates and session notes, and you can modify your target time and rearrange sessions to suit your goals and commitments

So for a Saturday warmup Agata chose a run down to the Lake and Marcus chose a few Km swim splashing around Bellerive-Plage, so we continue our account at Sunday morning..

We managed to catch something called a BUS?

A particuarly safe Swiss bus with no less than 5 break out safety hammers

Our taxes have helped pay for this telescope to look at leaves on the opposite side of the ravine

12.30 Arrival at the Lake. 25 degrees. We chose to do our 15Km runs apart so as not to annoy each other. Agata would be following her Garmin plan and Marcus would ignore all plans and just go off for a run.

The we arrived at Ania, Ilona, Mariana and Simona's joint birthday-namesday celebration BBQ.

Like all summer parties a newborn infant and proud parents are essential. Say hello to [redacted] and Kasia and baby Cecile.

Lola and Luigi were busy playing

Birthday girl Simone is practicing for ?

    Ania started practicing too

Marcus is in his usual Horizontal mode

Ania involved in the pass the baby competition

    Nearly all the women!

    At last: Cake time

Luigi enjoys his choice diet of fingers

In Lausanne even the toy trains are on time

So thanks to all for a wonderfully lazy Sunday afternoon.

    OSX go to Dell

Well this article and of course hackint0sh are probably driving Dell and HP netbook sales through the roof right now. But buyers beware, it's still not really a plug and play solution.

    Global Storming

As the skies darkened in Bussigny this Thursday afternoon I'm sure nobody would imagine that this environ of Lausanne would be subjected to a miniature hailstorm attack similar to the one that devastated Vevey almost exactly four years ago

But it did come, and hailstones almost the size of golf balls rained down on us for a period of almost 5 minutes. Now, as four years ago the main punishment is the evidence left on any cars not parked under cover

    Cars dented

    All this, in July :-(

    Don't Stop me Now

It would be a shame to leave Lausanne, Switzerland but with just 7 working days until the end of my contract I have to face facts. Perhaps if we all sing along to this song

Tonight, I'm gonna have myself a real good time .....

the auras will encircle my indecisive employer so they don't stop me now (because believe me I'm having such a good time)

    Farewell 6H1

What a morose week this is becoming and it is only Wednesday! I've already been saddened by VJ's departure, and don't even get me started about the fact that Michel and I finish work here in just 9 days. So when I saw this latest purge of IBM AIX 7026-6H1 machines on the loading bay at work my heart sank just a little further.

I think despair might have set in but for my fatih in Silicon Heaven

    Au revoir Vijaykumar Venugopal

It is with a heavy heart that we wish au revoir to Vijay our superb Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM) specialist. As I type VJ will probably be boarding a plane with his family en route to his other home in Chennai.

This morning I did not find a cheerful hello or welcome smile from Vijay just an empty desk.

VJ's good nature, helpfulness and great TSM skill are quite legendary. We wish him all the best for the future.

    Tour de France?

In an effort to raise the quality of the Tour de France 2009
those nice Swiss people have invited the riders into our beautful canton of Vaud. With twisty mountain roads, challenging gradients, beautiful scenery and posh hotels in Verbier, well what self respecting Pro Cycling team would not want to come to Switzerland.

So this Sunday morning we set off for Thierrens
conveniently located a mere 20Km away from our home

We arrived at about noon just in time for the Caravan

The Cycling Caravan i.e. a procession of Race sponsors, typically passing and throwing us various freebies proceeded for about one hour

More than 20 displays passed by

We looked for a good position, these guys dont look like they are about to Sprint anywhere

As time progressed it got a little colder. Stubborn to the last Marcus tried to put his emergency coat on without removing helmet. Hilarity ensued.

The American family complete with children, monster dog and sterotypical cowboy man decides to move on.

Ah Skoda, the de facto standard Pro Cycling support vehicle. Perhaps we need one!

    The First riders appear

    The Middle section

    The Rear pack

Aaaah Shimano Dura Ace 7900 ... nice

    Aaaah ... SRAM nice

Come on teams, how about a complimentary pro cycle for us. We'd make such good use of it.

    And finally!

    The return of Michael Jackson

I was simply speechless when I saw the BBC Music DVD / Video chart this week. Seems like MJ has never been so popular.

So when we've bought enough music and memorabilia will it be time for Michael to come back to us?

    Nuts and Kernels

When you have far too much time on your hands I'd recommend you start reading about Operating System Kernels. It is a great intellectual challenge. But be warned, it can drive you nuts

    Mac OSX

And so, when you have read just a few documents hopefully you might have some more respect when a fatal error in your favourite Operating System stops you and it in your tracks:
